I'm sure some people prefer reading books before watching the movie based on their reading or maybe some prefer watching movies over books. For me, it really depends. I love reading and if a movie based on a book comes out, I will read the book first. Yet there are also times when I watch a movie, not realizing it was a book first, and I won't want to read the book for fear it will change my thoughts on the movie. Especially if the movie was good.
A prime example of that is The Help. That is my favorite movie of all time. The actors did an amazing job, and I think it was one of Emma Stone's best movies. The dialogue matched the time period it was set it as did the props and wardrobe. I love that movie, but I won't read the book out of fear that it will change my opinion on the movie, especially since I've heard really good things about the book.
I can say the opposite regarding the Percy Jackson book series. I read those books for the first time when I was just a kid, and now I own the series. I was excited when the first movie came out, but was horribly disappointed when I finally saw it, it did not do the books justice. One of the main issues was the age of the cast members. They had to change the prophecy, which was a main point in the books, just because of the ages of the cast. In that case, I was happy to read the books first. I am looking forward to a show that is set to come out on Disney+ in December. The author, Rick Riordan, will be working closely with the director so the show will be a lot better than the movies, hopefully.
These are just a few examples, but I'm sure there are even more. In some cases, it is better to read the books before watching the movie, yet the opposite is true in other cases. It really depends on the person and what they like.
